Use of Mother-Tongue as Medium of Instruction in Class Rooms form Elementary to Secondary School Stage of Odisha State

Abstract
Language is the instrument of thought and communication and as such plays an important role in the development of human civilization and culture. India is a big country where people speak a large number of languages. Language impacts the daily lives of members of any race, creed, and region of the world. Language helps to express our feelings, desires and queries of the world around us words, gestures and tone are utilized in union to portray a broad spectrum emotion. In Odisha people usually use odia language, though there are minority groups speaking various languages. There are 82% of total population of Odisha speaks odia as a native speakers. So it is the official language in Odisha and it is the second official language of Jharkhand. Odia is the sixth Indian language to be designated a classical language in India on the basis of having a long literary history. Odia is the mother-tongue of the odias. It is called mother tongues because the odia child learns this language in his mother’s lap. It is the language in which the child thinks and dreams. So the role of mother tongue in the education of the child cannot be over emphasized. So, in Odisha the medium of instruction from early stage to secondary school stage is odia.
