Determination of Benzene and Methyl-Tert-Butylether (MTBE) Content in Gasoline Fuel by Partial Least Square Regression Applied to FTIR Spectra

Abstract
In this work the concentration of Benzene and MTBE content in gasoline fuel are predicted. The samples of gasoline fuel are collected from different gas station inside Aizawl city area and some parts of Mizoram, few of the samples are obtained from nearby state of Mizoram. The total of 170 samples are collected and 16 sample are oxygenated. The prediction models were developed for both Benzene and MTBE as per ASTM method. The spectra of fuel samples and Calibration models are analyzed by mid infrared spectroscopy coupled with Multivariate technique of Partial Least Square Regression. According to the prediction model the concentration of Benzene and MTBE are estimated as 0.29-1.14 % v/v and 0.12-13.2 % v/v. The result shows that FTIR associated with Multivariate PLS technique is simple and powerful method for quantification analysis. We also found that determining the content of chemical compounds is required for fuel quality specification.
