PRESURGICAL NASO ALVEOLAR MOLDING-IS IT WORTH THE EFFORT?

Abstract
Abstract - Introduction - Cleft lip and palate are one of the most common congenital anamolies. Around 25000 to 35000 babies are born in india have cleft lip and or palate. Presurgical Naso alveolar Molding is adjuvant technique to improve the quality of surgical repair. Material and method: three cases were considered for naso alveaolar molding who reported to department for treatment. Aim and objectives: 1. On alveolar segments; reduction of alveolar cleft gap, alignment of lesser and greater alveolar segments, approximation of alveolar cleft without maxillary arch constriction. 2. On lips; appoximation of lip segments and medialisation of premaxilla in bilateral cleft lip. 3. On nose; non surgical collumellar lengthening, reduction of nasal tip width, improve nasal tip projection, decrease nasal alar base width, improve nostril shape. Discussion and conclusion- While the use of presurgical infant orthopaedic devices remains controversial, a growing collection of studies has shown that presurgical nasoalveolar moulding and collumellar elongation provide safe ,effective and lasting improvements in the esthetics of naso labial complex in infants with unilateral or bilateral cleft deformities.
