Paper Title
ROLE OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE PRACTICES TOWARDS FOOD SECURITY AND LIVELIHOOD IN INDIA
Abstract
Abstract - Food security has raised a lot of concern the world over, given that more than 850 million people are food insecure globally. The increase in the world population has led to the high demand for food resulting in food insecurity and malnutrition worldwide, India is not exceptional. This has been aggravated by changes in agriculture practices and climate change as they affect the food production, distribution and consumption in the rural communities. This paper is an attempt to examine the role of sustainable agriculture practices in improving food security and livelihood in India. This study adopted a non-systematic review approach. It was revealed that India has not adopted majority of sustainable agriculture practices. This is even though sustainable farming practices could enhance food security and livelihood. The country does not have enough food to feed its own people. There is a strong potential to utilise sustainable farming practices to improve the food security and surplus food for income generationin India. Not all food dimensions were targeted by the Indian food policies, the food stability dimension was never considered in any of the schemes. Despite tremendous growth, India is still home to a quarter of all the undernourished population in the world, therefore there is need to encourage both subsistence and intensive farmers to adopted sustainable agriculture practices.
