Perceptions on LGBTQ: An Empirical Study of Bachelor of Public Service and Governance (BPSG) Students, Padmakanya Multiple Campus, Kathmandu, Nepal

Abstract
This research aims to explore the knowledge of LGBTQ community among Bachelor in Public Service and Governance (BPSG) students. The acronym LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) refers to all communities who identify themselves with this term which encompasses various gender or sexual orientations. Humans are assigned with sex like male and female by birth but some individuals may experience opposite genders over time, with many being born transgender. Sex is a biological phenomenon, while gender is a societal perspective, often leading to societal belief in mental abnormalities. Perception about LGBTQ is influenced by environmental stimuli and can vary, with some individuals accepting it despite being sexually deviant. The LGBTQ community’s perceptions are influenced by various factors, including cultural, social, and political influences. While there has been positive growth in acceptance, there is a generation gap, with younger generations generally more accepting. Cultural and geographic variations also play a role, with some regions experiencing stigmatization and discrimination while others enjoy greater acceptance and legal protections. LGBTQ is considered a deviation from human nature, as humans are designed to live in pairs, therefore perceptions of people regarding LGBTQ community plays a crucial role. The severe discrimination towards LGBTQ community has brought various physical as well as mental problems which aren’t brought in public sphere and needs to be addressed quickly. This study focuses on exploring the perceptions of students on LGBTQ community and examining the stigmas related to the acceptance of sexual diversity. For this study, exploratory and descriptive research design is used to analyze and evaluate student’s perceptions. As per the requirement of the study both primary and secondary data have been collected. Through simple random sampling, 50 samples were selected with serial number and lottery method was used. Data was collected through questionnaires, interview with LGBTQ individuals and group discussions with students. Both open and close ended questions were asked to participants. This study helps to promote inclusiveness for the LGBTQ community and also supports the policymakers to make the policy on the LGBTQ issues.
