MAYYAZHIPPUZHAYUDE THEERANGALIL AT 50S: A STUDY OF ITS ENDURING POPULARITY
Abstract
“On the Banks of the Mayyazhi” (MayyazhippuzhayudeTheerangalil) a Malayalam novel written by M. Mukundan. The novel vividly and mystically describes the social and political background of French former colony of Mahe. It is published in 1974 in Malayalam, 1998 it is translated into Tamil, in 1999 it translated into English and 2002 it translated into French. After 50 years of its publication yet now the novel, its characters, themes and stories are celebrated in literature. ManiyambathMukundan, who is known as M. Mukundan, is an author of Malayalam literature. At the beginning ofhis career most of the works were based on Mahi. Some of his popular works are MayyazhippuzhaudeTheerangalil, DaivathinteVikrithikal, KesaventeVilapangal and pravasam. He has received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1973), ShatyaAkademi Award (1992). He is also receipt of the Chevalier Des Arts Des Letters of the government of French, Cross Word Book Award. In this paper I would like to present about the novel, why it is celebrating even after 50 years through its story, theme and social background. The main character Dasan and his girlfriend Chandrik and his teacher kunjanthan are very important in the present world. A person who goes through the novel will be influenced by it.
