Leveraging FPOs to Enhance Participation in Agricultural Commodity Derivative Market: Opportunities and Challenges for Cotton Farmers of Odisha (India)

Abstract
Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to examine the current state of participation in agricultural commodity derivatives among cotton farmers in Odisha in the agricultural commodity derivative market. Methods: This study has targeted to use a descriptive design that has focused on analysing the primary quantitative sets of information generated from the suitable cotton farmers belonging to Odisha. A set of 101 participants bearing direct connection with cotton farming in Odisha have been considered as the appropriate sample elements. Depending on the Likert scale method, they have been asked 10 close ended questions. The questionnaire is generated with the help of the variables set by directly connecting those to the hypothesis of the study. Results and Discussion: The most number of participants that have focused on answering to the survey questions were mostly from the age group of 36 to 50. Most of the participants have shown their strong agreement with the fact that FPOs play an important role in generating the awareness amongst Odia cotton farmers about scientific cotton farming. The correlation is found to be highest against the second element of the second independent variable, which indicates the significant role played by the FPOs in saving the cotton farmers during post cyclonic atmosphere in Odisha, bearing the value of 0.476. Moreover, the entire hypothesis has been proven through because their t values are found to be more than 60.
