GNU RADIO AND SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO ENHANCES SELF-LEARNING AND BRIDGES THE GAPS IN TELEMETRY AND COMMUNICATION COURSE

Abstract
Although a significant number of theoretical results have been verified by simulations, limited results are available on the implementation of wireless communication. To verify whether the real-time result agrees with the theoretical performance or not, it is essential to implement the concepts instead of simulation. Hence there is a need for generic hardware and software so that entire communication concepts can be exposed and implemented in a short time.GNU Radio software implements the communication system and also modifies the network based on the requirement in a short time instead of using the conventional procedure for implementation. Thus Software Defined Radio (with its generic hardware and software) provides re-configurability, that has an impact on the evolution of future wireless communications and networking systems. Therefore advanced learning is possible through the software called GNU Radio which is an open-source software simulation tool. This learning approach helps the scholar to get more understanding about the real-time implementation of communication systems and signal processing. The paper describes the development of a new way to learn the course wireless communication system by making use of GNU Radio. The paper emphasizes the deployment of GNU Radio for understanding various concepts so that it enhances pedagogy and self-learning in understanding various concepts such as filtering, analyzing the received signal, channel synchronization concepts, and reconfiguration of analog/digital communication systems, etc. Keywords - Cognitive Radio(CR); Learning process ; Brainstorming; Software Defined Radio(SDR)
