Paper Title
LADY MACBETH: A SAGA OF SELFLESS LOVE AND SACRIFICE, QUESTIONING TRADITIONAL GENDER ROLES IN SOCIETY
Abstract
I yearn for a world where I can live freely, without any fear or insecurities to have been born a woman. I yearn for a world where I can live as an equal to men without having to fight for it. I yearn for a world where I can live life on my own terms with every right to be happy as I wish to be. I yearn to be seen, heard and appreciated as an individual. This, in the 21st century, when we claim to have progressed far from the dirges of patriarchy and women oppression. Imagine, a seventeenth century world where women were bound by the shackles of a patriarchal existence. And imagine a writer, and a man in the Elizabethan Ageof the pretentious, superficial, and male dominated society of Europe, who rose above the rigours of such narrow thinking and gave life and voice to heart-wrenchingly powerful women of great strength and resilience in his literary works. Contrary to popular belief that women’s liberation and feminism are issues of grave importance in contemporary times, these commendable, admirable and awe-inspiring women characters exemplify that these notions and concepts are ages old. The striving for independence, the desire to live according to personal choices, the right to exist on her own terms and conditions has been present in the deepest contours of a woman’s heart since time immemorial. Lady Macbeth is one such woman... Strong. Assertive. Powerful. A woman of resilient grit and spellbindingly fascinating will power, who sacrifices her own being, the essence of her own life, for the all-encompassing love she feels for her husband and his prosperity, Lady Macbeth was, is and will always be an enigmatic read for eras to come.
