Effect of Cognitive Leisure Activities on Sustained Attention and Speed of Processing in Healthy Older Adults
Abstract
The population around the world has been ageing. The ways for to maintain mental wellbeing of the older adults is one of the critical research areas. This study is an effort to examine the efficacy of cognitive leisure activities in maintaining or improving two of most important cognitive functions: sustained attention and speed of processing in older adults. The quasi-experimental design was applied. The experimental group attended music, Sanskrit and bridge for one year while the control group did not engage in any long-term activities apart from their daily chores. The Digit Vigilance Test was used to assess attention and speed of processing at the beginning of the study and then after one year. The results suggested that regular engagement in cognitive leisure activities show positive impact on these cognitive abilities in older adults.
