Paper Title
Effect of Age on Verbal Fluency in Healthy Older Adults
Abstract
Verbal fluency is the ability to name as many words of a given category as possible in a defined time interval and is an integral part of neuropsychological test batteries for the diagnosis of dementia (Frankenberg et al., 2021). Tasks of verbal fluency are used to measure it in research and clinical settings. The commonly used tasks are Animal Naming Task (ANT) (Lezac,1995) and Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT) (Benton & Hamsher, 1989). Verbal fluency has been seen to be declining with advancing age (Rodriguez-Aranda & Martinussen, 2006;Gonzalez-Burgos et al., 2019). The current study aims to identify correlation between advancing age and verbal fluency in older adults. The study included 120 older adults from the age 60 to 80 years. The regression analysis results of age and their performance on Animal Naming Task and COWAT showed weak to moderate negative correlation between age and verbal fluency.
