BUCHI EMECHETA: SEXISM, INTERNALISED RACISM AND BLACK FEMINISM IN SECOND CLASS CITIZEN
Abstract
The focus of this paper is to study the effect of two concurrent forms ofoppression namely, sexism and internalised racism operating in the life of a Nigerian woman, Adah in Emecheta’s novel Second Class Citizen (1972). The initial section of this research paper will focus on the effects of sexism on Adah’s life during her childhood and later in her marriage. The following section will analyse the theme of internalised racism wherein the main perpetrator of racism is not the coloniser but the members of Adah’s own community. The last section will highlight the phase of feminist consciousness resulting in Adah’s understanding of the patriarchal culture in which she lived; and her refusal to degrade herself according to the traditional Nigerian societal demands. This section will also focus on the author’s occupation with Black feminism in combating the forces of oppressions working against African women.
