Brucellosis Presenting with Febrile Pancytopenia in Kashmir: Case Series
Abstract
Background: Brucellosis, a zoonotic infection caused by Brucella species, can present with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, including fever, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain. Hematological involvement, such as pancytopenia, though uncommon, may be an initial presentation along with fever.
Methods: We report a case series of six patients diagnosed with brucellosis who presented with febrile pancytopenia. Clinical features, laboratory findings, and management strategies were analysed.
Results: All patients had fever and pancytopenia. A history of exposure to animal or animal products was noted in most cases. Prompt diagnosis and initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy led to favourable clinical outcomes in all patients.
Conclusion: Brucellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of febrile pancytopenia, especially in endemic regions or in patients with relevant exposure history. Early recognition and timely therapy are essential to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes.
