THE IMPACT OF CYBERSECURITY IN DIGITAL SPACE PROTECTION

Abstract
The contemporary world is witnessing a fundamental transformation towards digitalisation and an ever-increasing reliance upon information and communications technologies across the various spheres of life, a development which has given rise to a vast digital environment characterised by both opportunities and challenges in equal measure. Within the context of this transformation, the concept of cybersecurity has emerged as one of the cardinal pillars for the protection of cyberspace from the mounting risks and threats. The research problem of the present study lies in examining the role of cybersecurity in safeguarding the digital domain, by way of an evaluation of the efficacy of Emirati legislation in the reinforcement of cybersecurity and the curtailment of cybercrimes. In order to attain the objectives of this study, the descriptive-analytical methodology has been adopted, predicated upon a survey of the foundational concepts associated with cybersecurity, an analysis of the nature of the relationship between cybersecurity and the law through an examination of the legislative provisions enshrined in Emirati statutes, and an assessment of their impact in mitigating cybercrimes. This study has concluded that the existence of an organised legal framework is of considerable importance and contributes substantially to the curtailment of cybercrimes, predicated upon the criminalisation of unlawful acts and the imposition of deterrent penalties. Accordingly, this study recommends the necessity of periodically updating the legislation relating to cybersecurity in order to keep pace with technological developments and the modern modus operandi of cybercrimes.
