Effectiveness of Lifestyle Intervention on Body Mass Index and Quality of Life of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic lifestyle disorder, increasing due to secondary life style and characterized by hyperglycemia. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has a strong negative impact on quality of life especially in presence of complications. Life style intervention is a simple noninvasive method for preventing and controlling T2DM and its related complications. This study was carried out to assess the effect of lifestyle intervention on Body Mass Index (BMI) and Quality of Life (QoL) of T2DM patients. This study included 200 T2DM patients from Delhi Diabetes Research Center (DDRC), New Delhi. The patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 received lifestyle intervention with standard care and Group 2 not received lifestyle intervention and received only standard care. QoL of both groups measured with the help of SF-36 standard quality of life questionnaire. The fellow up of both groups has been done at baseline and 6 months and collected data was analyzed through IBM, SPSS software for mean, SD, paired sample t � test with P- value. This study showed lifestyle intervention was effective in weight control (weight and body mass index) and improves quality of life of patients who were received lifestyle intervention as compare to patients received only usual care. Therefore, lifestyle intervention is an effective way to maintain BMI and improve quality of life. Index terms: Lifestyle Intervention, Body Mass Index (BMI), Quality of Life, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
