Fabrication and Characterization of Aluminum Alloy Metal Matrix Composites using Stir Casting
Abstract
Composite materials which main constituents part is a metal are called metal matrix composite. The other compound may metal too, ceramic or even organic. They are well known for their excellent mechanical and physical properties. It is most widely used in aerospace industry, automobile, modern construction and marine industry due to its high strength to weight ratio. In this research work stir casting was used as processing technique for the production of Aluminium metal matrix composite reinforced by silicon carbide and egg shell particles. The mechanical characteristics of the produced composite material such as hardness, toughness, tensile strength and flexural strength were tested of varying silicon carbide and egg shell weight percentage. The test result shows a notable improvement in toughness and hardness but slightly decreased tensile and flexural strength.
