Heavy Metal Contamination Assessment

Abstract
Ludhiana district falls in central part of Punjab. The district is confined between North latitude 300 33’ and 310 01’ and East longitude 750 25’ and 760 27’.Ludhiana, the first metropolitan city of the State of Punjab, located on National Highway-I, has emerged as the most vibrant and important business center of Punjab.Ludhiana city is one of the highly industrialized towns in the north India, having all categories of industries located within the city limits. Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in Ludhianathough contributed to economic development, has resulted in heavy losses to economic welfare in terms of effects on agricultural activities, human health and ecosystems at large through air, soil and water pollution. Untreated sewage and industrial water, indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes contributes heavy metals in soil. The pollution levels in soil have been studied and its impacts are discussed in the present paper. Total six sites locations were selected in vicinity of Buddha Nullah and its adjoining areas. Heavy Metals were analyzed and it was observed that average concentration values of Lead, Cadmium and Chromium were exceeding the limits. Keywords - Heavy metals, Pollution, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead
