Review on Gait Analysis Techniques

Abstract
Gait is walking pattern of any musculoskeletal system referred mostly for human beings. Each human being has a unique gait pattern with unique posture as well as pace of walking. This pattern changes with every little change in person’s life. The gait of the person indicates the health as well as lifestyle of the person. Study of this walking pattern is known as Gait Analysis. Gait analysis serves a major role in bio-mechanics. The clinical evaluation of gait can be used for diagnosis of deformation of any part of human body, design and analysis of prosthesis and also for research. The gait can be examined by different techniques for clinical purpose. The technique used for analysis is decided by the purpose of the study, required observations and available systems. For this study, literature survey on gait and gait analysis is done which shows that a lot of research has been done based on gait of the subject where the evaluation is used for exploring various areas of biotechnology. This work has been useful for modelling of different anatomical systems which is further used for different research such as design of prosthesis, evaluation of treatment for diagnosed disabilities or even person identification. There are different gait analysis techniques used which are distinguished by the process of marking the required points for force calculation or by the devices used for data collection. In this report, the various gait analysis techniques and the applications of these methods are explained. The comparison between techniques based on several factors is defined and the conclusion shows the optimum technique which can be used according to the required purpose.
