A Study on Coping towards Stress and Aggression of Bank Employees’: Comparison across Gender
Abstract
Stress is a biological and psychological response experienced on encountering a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with. Stress has a major impact on mental and physical health. To cope with stressful events, people use different coping strategies. Coping strategies refer to the specific efforts, both behavioral and psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize stressful events. Early life stress in humans enhances the risk for psychopathologies, including excessive aggression and violence. The main thrust area of this study is to see the difference in coping strategy towards stress and aggression (inward and outward) among male and female bank employees (20-35 years of age). This study can help in understanding the nature of job pressure which costs and does have an impact on aggression and coping strategy towards stress of bank employees.
The sampling technique for the present study is mainly purposive. Total 100 bank employees (50 males and 50 females) between the age of 20-35 years, have been selected for the study.
To see the difference between male and female bank employees with respect to their ways of coping strategies and anger level t- test is used. Correlation is used to see the relation between coping strategy and anger level across gender.
Present study shows that significant gender difference is found in confrontive coping, seeking social support, accepting responsibility, escape avoidance, planful problem solving, and positive reappraisal. Present study shows that significant gender difference is found only in Anger Expression-In (AX-I). The relationship between coping responses and anger expression and control is also an interest area of this study. A significant positive correlation is found between Anger Expression –Out (AX-O) and escape avoidance coping strategy in case of female employees. In case of male bank employees a significant negative relation is found between Anger Expression –Out (AX-O) and self controlling coping.
