Paper Title
Impact on Air Quality after Implement of BS VI Norms
Abstract
Emission from vehicles are one of the top contribution to air pollution which led the Government at the time to introduce the Bharat Stage (BS)-2000 (BS-I) or Euro 1 vehicle emission norm from April 2000 followed by BS-II in 2005.
India has some of most polluted cities in the world and automobiles are considered as one of the biggest actor responsible for it. At present, BS-IV emission norm is applicable in major cities of India. To control air pollution from diesel vehicle it was necessary to improve fuel consumption and reduce emission. It becomes necessary to implement BS -VI norm to reduce air pollution. Therefore, Indian government had decided to implement the next Bharat Stage norm (BS-VI) from 1 April, 2020. But, the 10 day relaxation of BS-VI deadline granted by the Supreme Court of India due to the Lockdown is unlikely to do 'any good ' to the automobile industry amid the Coronovirus outbreak, a report said on Monday.
In this paper, we shall discuss about the impact of implementation of BS-VI norms on air quality, fuel quality and fuel price. Bharat stage -VI fuel is said to significant reduce Greenhouse gas emission especially CO2 unburnt hydrocarbon or Methane and oxides of NOx. It has sulphur content of 10 ppm against 50 ppm in BS-IV norm. This will be top priority of manufacturer. Because sulphur content in fuel is a major cause for concern.SO2 released by fuel burning is a major pollutant. Therefore, BS-VI standard fuel is said to be the world cleanest fuel.
