Mental Health of Primary Caregivers of Schizophrenia and Intellectual Disability
Abstract
Background: The main objective of the current study was to assess the overall mental health in primary caregivers of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, intellectual disability and parents of children with no mental disorder.
Methodology: The sample for the study consisted of 167 primary caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, 167 primary caregivers of children with intellectual disability and 167 parents of normal Children. The sample was collected from the OPD department of SMS Psychiatric centre, Jaipur. The control group was collected from the parents of children studying in different schools.
Results: The study showed the effects of care giving on the mental health of the care giver. The results of the current study showed, that in care givers of patients with schizophrenia, anxiety, depression and somatic complaints were significantly higher when compared with care givers of intellectual disability and control groups. The results also showed that the care givers of the patients with intellectual disability, showed significantly higher anxiety, depression and Somatic complaints when compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Caregivers of schizophrenia and intellectual disability are more prone to develop mental health problem like anxiety, depression when compare to normal population. Caregivers of schizophrenia are at higher risk to develop anxiety as their futures are insured comparatively more than caregivers of intellectual disability.
