Risk Profiling of Indian Private Sector Banks
Abstract
Private sector banks are major contributors to the profitability and performance of Indian banking sector. The present study aims to perform the risk profiling of the largest 10 private banks of the country in order to classify them into various risk clusters. The study is conducted for the period of 2008-2019 on 10 financial variables using the k-means clustering techniques and it classifies the banks into high, medium, and low risk clusters. The findings suggest that most of the private banks fall in medium risk clusters followed by low and high risk respectively. The most important variables which determine the difference between these clusters are Loans to Deposit Ratio and Deposits to Liability Ratio followed by profitability indicators of ROA, ROE and net profit. Non performing assets do not emerge as a significant variable in determining the risk profile of these banks.
