IoT and its Impact in Rural Regions

Abstract
The arena of IoT has gained significant attention by the Government in recent years for development of underdeveloped and underprivileged rural regions for ensuring overall development of country’s economy. Different policies and programs have been initiated for digitization of rural economy to empower those regions and connect them with urban India. There have been revolutionary changes in ways organizations provide services to rural people and ways people gain access to those services post implementation of advanced IoT solutions. The rural regions are mostly dependent upon agricultural sector, healthcare and energy sector and implementation of IoT-based services has enhanced their performance and profitability significantly. However, these industries are facing numerous challenges in gaining full benefits from IoT solutions and potential issues in adopting IoT solutions include poor infrastructure, inadequate knowledge regarding use of these technologies, lack of acceptance, huge costs and many more. In present critical assessment, different concepts and theoretical frameworks have been illustrated for analysing impact of IoT in rural regions and ways it has brought improvement in performance in different sectors. It has proposed various solutions that could be considered for addressing potential problems in adoption of IoT-enabled infrastructures in rural India. Inductive approach has been employed for deriving meaningful conclusions after analysing research information collected through secondary and primary sources. 3 managers from different sectors of rural regions have been approached for participating in interview and providing relevant insights on ways IoT has influenced various industries in rural regions. Results of this study indicates positive relation between adoption of IoT solutions and improvement in industrial performance.
