Paper Title
Status of Women Infertility in Reproductive Health Programme of India

Abstract
Over population is the major problem of India. The pressures of the rapidly growing population and the need to control it have been felt by both the Indian Government and intellectuals since independence. This is good news for an overcrowded nation. But in the process where are the couples eager to bear their own children and not capable of reproduction. The paper looks at the importance attached to infertility in a variety of initiatives taken by Government of India, particularly those having a bearing on the interventions especially under the RCH programme. An analysis of various five year plans and different health & population initiatives implemented from time to time in India was undertaken. Data highlighted that main focus of all maternal and child health programmes initiated in early times and reproductive health programmes in later times was on controlling population or on looking into welfare of those delivering and taking birth. Few steps taken to address the issue of infertile couples have been confined to the medical and legal aspects alone and other perspectives to address this issue have been ignored. Support for infertility is not a priority in our universal national health insurance programme. It is a neglected domain of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Instead of ignoring infertility, it should become part of the primary public health care system in India. The need of today is to expand the concept of reproductive health and recognize infertility care. Keywords - Infertility, Family Planning, Reproductive health, Women, Over-population.
