Effects of Surface Tensions on Negative Pressures and Cavitation Bubbles

Abstract
Negative pressure is generated when the liquid is tensioned. Negative pressure is thought to be useful for elucidating the mechanism of environmental stress cracks and for sterilization and cleaning techniques, but it is necessary to suppress cavitation. Cavitation is triggered by gases trapped in crevicesin fine dustsand/or on solid surfaces. There are few methods to generate negative pressures, but in this experiment, we used the Berthelot method, which could measure negative pressures of various liquids;by a newly designed tube built in observation window, we measurednegative pressures for six types of liquids whose surface tension dispersion and polar componentswere known.As a result, high correlation between dispersion force components of surface tensions and average negative pressures were indicated. In the observation of cavitation bubbles, there wereremarkable differences in bubbles’behaviors due to the difference in the polar force components.
