Ergonomic Tools and Training Intervention for Artisans: A Pre-Post Design Analysis in Hand-Knotted Carpet Industry of Jaipur

Abstract
Carpet weaving is one of the oldest industry of India. This art is well known for its richness and craftsmanship. Weaving is a tedious process followed by artisans sitting in awkward position doing repetitive action for a long time which is the requirement of the construction of the product. Carpet weaving has various steps to go through before becoming an alluring piece of art. The process of making a carpet has not changed but there is up gradation observed from manual working to mechanical working due to the problems faced by the artisans in different steps of building a carpet. They suffer from physical problems body stress, muscle fatigue, pain and inflammation in different body organs, congestion in chest and throat and disorder in organs over a long term. An attempt of ergonomic intervention programme in this case proved to be a successful solution in terms of increasing the reduction in the physical problems faced by them, increase in work efficiency and ultimately the overall production in the industry in Jaipur.
