Paper Title
Landslide Early Warning Detection System
Abstract
Landslides have been the major cause of destruction nowadays. Huge amounts of money and lives are lost to landslides. With modernization, the usage of sensors has become vast. Sensors have now not only been used in the electronics or electrical fields, but it has a major impact in the field of Civil engineering. In this project, a system was developed whereby, the sensors used could detect the changes in the soil contents and through sensors and Arduino IDE software, accordingly, people would be warned before the event so that lives and the infrastructure damage caused are minimized to the least. A site location where frequent landslides occur was selected, keeping in mind that the type of landslide occurring on the site is debris and slide. Several sensor nodes consisting of soil moisture and ultrasonic sensors were placed at some distance apart such that a whole area to be studied was covered, which improved the accuracy of the model. Kotrupi landslide which took place on the 13th of August, is considered the site location for this paper. A slope model of similar properties to the site selected was developed and the system developed was tested. The system worked as it was programmed to do, and suitable results were obtained, which are being presented in the later section of the paper. The cumulative score of the site was calculated to enhance the risk surveillance and warning system and a limit of 65% of moisture and 15cm of the ultrasonic was set so that when it was exceeded or fulfilled, an alarm would go off with a text warning displayed on the serial monitor of Arduino IDE.
