Paper Title
Use of Playback Theatre with Assistive Technology for Inclusion and Community Building for People with Disabilities
Abstract
This paper presents the work done by First Drop Theatre, a Bangalore based applied theatre company which uses Applied Theatre and Expressive Arts, to facilitate dialogue towards community building. The usage of assistive technology by the disabled performers of First Drop Theatre in this endeavor are also discussed. Art has a strong ability to be a powerful voice for the voiceless. Through tapping into the authentic experiences of people, it can create awareness among communities. First Drop Theatre uses Playback Theatre, an interactive and improvised form of theatre, to provide a voice for the disabled and to raise awareness on inclusion. The First Drop team consists of performers with different disabilities. And they use various assistive technologies such as screen readers to use platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams to collaborate and perform. Using playback theatre and technology, disabled performers at First Drop Theatre work with corporate and social organizations, and different communities of the society to talk about employment opportunities for the disabled, accessible infrastructure, sensitization, and overall, the idea of inclusive society.
