Paper Title
A Review of Formality as an Important Aspect of Variation in Register and Style in Academic Writing: Method used to Gauge Textual Formality

Abstract
Academic writing demands objectivity of expression. A certain level of formality, therefore, needs to be maintained while engaging in it. An important dimension of variation between styles and registers, formality calls for the use of expressions that are less dependent on context. A closer examination reveals that that an informal style is more flexible and direct while a formal style is detached, accurate and rigid. In addition to this, nouns, adjectives, articles and prepositions are an integral part of formal writing; pronouns, verbs, adverbs and interjections, on the other hand, are used more frequently in informal writing. Since the university students are assigned tasks that demand formality and scholars need to write research papers requiring formality, it is important to look at the various dimensions that determine formality and the methods used to gauge it. This paper examines methods used to gauge textual formality. This paper uses the F-statistic based on deictic and non-deictic words to calculate the F-Score of a given text.
