Hydrothermal Synthesis of High Surface Area and Porous Magnetite Nanoparticles as an Electrode Materialfor Supercapacitors

Abstract
Porous, high surface area magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles have been prepared by a simple low-temperature hydrothermal method. The prepared porous nanostructure is polycrystalline and porous with a high surface area of 192 m2 g-1. The high discharge capacitance of Fe3O4electrodes is 278 Fg-1at 1 A g-1 in 0.5 M Na2SO3 electrolyte. The capacitance retention after 3000 cycles is about 79% of the initial capacitance at a current density of 2 A g-1. The high discharge capacitance of Fe3O4electrodes is attributed to high surface area and porosity of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. As the electrode material prepared using Fe3O4 nanoparticles is inexpensive and expected to be potential use for supercapacitor application.
