Paper Title
Safety and Quality Effectiveness in Factories through Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Safety of employees is always the most important priority for all factories. Safety incidents can be extremely disruptive and hence significant resources are spent to ensure unsafe conditions &unsafe acts are always avoided. While investments in safety historically have been in form of trainings and awareness programs, Industry 4.0 now presents some new ways of ensuring safety compliances, even at times when supervision is low or nonexistent. Similar to Safety, Quality is also an equally important priority area for all plants. To ensure products manufactured are of good quality, there are multiple process checks which are built into the process. However, an analysis of quality failures most often highlights gaps in efficacy of those process checks since it is difficult to keep proof of those. Here again Industry 4.0 is presenting unique opportunities to the factories to ensure efficacy of the process checks by advanced technologies. This paper aims to highlight one Industry 4.0 technology – Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has a potential to transform the ways in which Safety and Quality are controlled in Factories. In the area of Safety, controlling unsafe behaviors by temporary manpower is a big pain point which can be very effectively addressed by Artificial Intelligence. Unsafe acts can be identified automatically by AI. In Quality unsupervised rework activity is one area, where Artificial Intelligence presents a wonderful opportunity where in unacceptable practices get identified on real time basis and supervisors also get alerts real time. This paper also highlights how a small-scale vendor ecosystem can proliferate the penetration of artificial intelligence in Safety and Quality, since the costs involved are not high and solutions can be highly affordable for small and medium enterprises too
