Paper Title
Forming and Shifting Identity: Psychological Dissection of Shashi Godbole of English Vinglish and Aditi of Astitva

Abstract
With the advent of modernization, people have started questioning their existence and with that began an era of the quest for self-identity. There are various factors that contribute in making the process of identity formation even more complex. Two films, English Vinglish and Astitva, depict the journey toward identity achievement taken by the female lead actresses Shashi and Aditi, respectively. The two individuals' lives are vastly different from one another, but their shared desire for independent self-identity has brought them together. Developmental psychologist James Marcia claims that a person transitions through the four stages of identity diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and achievement. His identity formation hypothesis is based on the unique decisions people make in various situations to obtain the status of identity achievement. The purpose of this paper is to examine Shashi and Aditi's psyches as they go through the difficult process of shaping their identities. This paper also examines the universality of human psychology, which makes the process of forming an identity more difficult because it can be so easily impacted by peers, society, and family.
