MULTILINGUALISM AND THE GERMAN AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM (A STUDY OF GERMAN AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM AT UNIVERSITY OF DELHI)

Abstract
Abstract - The language situation in India is like a mosaic with diverse language patterns that are closely connected with each other. The life situation is such that every Indian knows one or two languages besides his L1. German is usually learned as the first foreign language in India, which indicates that the German learner is already multilingual at this point. An average German learner has already gained experience with other languages before starting with German as foreign Language. The Objective of the research project was to reveal among Indian learners the existing linguistic competencies and potentials to use them as learning strategies in German as foreign language classroom. In this empirical study first the multilingual behaviour among Indian learners of German was observed and then it answered the question, in which way the existing languages help in learning German as autonomous learning, within communicative teaching, especially when the languages are closely related.
